Create your own football themed bean bag game to enjoy with your kids.
Tip: start this project in the morning so that you can play with it after lunch if any optional paint used has had a chance to dry. What you will need:
How to make the basket:
- A large handled basket (this is a good way to recycle an old Easter basket)
- 1 piece of stiff Green felt (12x18)
- 1 piece of stiff brown & white felt (8x12)
- 1 bag of mini felt football stickers (can be found in the same craft aisle as the felt sheets)
- Colored pencils (white, red, yellow) or crayons
- Hole punch
- Glue gun
- 4 socks (this is a good way to recycle odd socks if you do not want to use matching pairs)
- Rice or dried beans
- Yarn (any color)
- 1 piece of scrap paper
- Optional: red glitter and puff paint (white, red, yellow)
First find a large basket with a handle. If you do not have one available complete the steps to make the football field portion and attach it to a wall, then find an empty box to catch the bean bags underneath.
To make your football field you will need the 12x18 piece of green felt and a ruler. Using a white colored pencil or a crayon draw yard lines (the 50, 40, 30, 20) and use yellow colored pencil for the goal post on either end. Decide which end will be the top and write the words “Touch Down” with red. Add a felt football sticker to the corners.
To decorate the center of the football field cut out a football shape in brown felt. Cut 2 strips of white felt for stripes. Next draw stitching with a white colored pencil. Use a glue gun to attach the stripes to the football and then to attach the football to the center of the green felt.
Optional: go over the words “Touch Down” with red puff paint and glitter. Use white puff paint on the football stitching and yellow on the goal posts. You will need to allow the field time to dry before use if you follow this step.
If your football field is dry take a hole puncher and make one hole on either side of the field and use a piece of yarn to attach it to your basket. The football field should sit inside the basket. Your toss basket is now complete. Tip: a big can of soup will add some weight to your basket to help keep it from sliding around too much during play.
How to make the bean bags:
Take 4 socks and fill them with dried rice or beans. Then use a piece of yarn to tie the top of each sock closed. Be sure to knot them tightly so that your filling will not spill out when tossed.
Next take 4 felt football stickers and attach them to a piece of scrap paper. Cut out each football and write on the back of each one:
1) Touchdown- 6pts, 2) Field goal- 5pts, 3) Safety- 2pts, 4) Extra point- 1pt
To complete the bean bags punch a hole in each football with the hole puncher and then use a piece of yarn to tie each football to a sock.
How to play the game:
(Younger players) Try to toss all 4 bean bags in the basket on your turn. If you miss, it is the next players turn. If you land all 4 do a chicken dance across the room.
(Older players) take scrap paper and set up a score card for each player. As each player takes their turn count up the points from the bean bags that land in the basket. The player with the most points wins.
