Are Frozen Berries as Nutritious as Fresh?

Q: Are frozen berries as nutritious as fresh?
A: Great news for berry lovers — you don’t have to pay premium prices for “fresh” berries during winter. Frozen berries are just as nutritious, and in some cases higher in certain nutrients, than fresh berries. Berries of all types are rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants that help protect against cell damage that leads to diseases like cancer, heart disease, impaired vision, and age-related decline in both memory and motor skills. The vitamin C content of foods normally decreases as storage time increases, but freezing retains vitamin C content. Other antioxidants such as anthocyanins actually increase slightly after storage, meaning frozen berries have more of some antioxidants than berries fresh from the farm. The bottom line is that blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are nutritious in any form — fresh, frozen, cooked or dried! Enjoy the fabulous flavor of fresh berries when they’re in season, but take advantage of the nutritional benefits of frozen berries when summer fades.

Sprinkle berries on cereal, stir into yogurt, use as a topping on pancakes, or toss into fruit salads. Choose berries frozen without added sugar for the least calories and highest nutritional value.
