Planning an Ethnic Food Feast

Sure you want your family to eat healthy, but that doesn't have to mean the same old menu night after night. Exploring ethnic cuisine can be a delicious and culturally enriching experience for you and your family to share.

First, decide what kind of ethnic foods you like. Mexican? Italian? French? Would you prefer tacos or lasagna, chicken cordon bleu or bratwurst and sauerkraut? What about a Chinese stir fry?

The next step is finding the right ingredients. Ideally, you should be able to find everything you need at your local grocery store, but some recipes may call for herbs, spices and vegetables that are less mainstream than your average supermarket fare. If you find yourself in need of fresh cilantro for your gazpacho or some masala powder for your Indian curry dish, you may have to seek out smaller, specialty shops that cater to ethnic cuisine.

Last but not least, is ambience. The right music can add the perfect finishing touch to your ethnic theme meal. Eating Italian? Why not put on Frank Sinatra or Andrea Bocelli? Having French food? Try some Edith Piaf or Serge Gainsbourg. A Spanish menu with paella and tapas could be accompanied by Flamenco music!

Variety is the spice of life, so why not designate at least one night a week as ethnic night in your home and explore the culinary delights that other cultures have to offer? It is sure to be a delectable and educational experience your whole family can share.

Bon appetit!
