Butter Toffee Bars have a sweet combination of chocolate and toffee. These are great for all occasions.

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter (we recommend Land O Lakes®), softened
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (6 oz.) NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Milk Chocolate Morsels
  • 1/2 cup English toffee-flavored candy chips**

PREHEAT oven to 325° F.

BEAT sugar and butter in a large mixer bowl until creamy. Add egg yolk; beat well. Beat in flour. Press evenly onto bottom of ungreased 15 x 10-inch jelly-roll pan.

BAKE for 22 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned and center is still slightly soft. Sprinkle with chocolate chips (*NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mosels can be used instead). Let stand for 3 minutes or until morsels are shiny; spread evenly. Sprinkle with toffee chips (**you can also use 1 crushed English toffee candy bar). Cool for 1 hour; cut into bars with sharp knife while slightly warm.

Makes 4 dozen.

butter toffee bars

The bars were good. The chips did not melt enough to spread, even after returning to oven as suggested in review, so the bars had soft choc chips on top. May try melting chips in microwave next time then pouring on top. Batter sticky, suggest lightly flouring fingers when spreading dough in pan. Made in 13x9 pan and cooked in same amount of time.

A few tips

I have been making these bars for about 35 years now and still love the way that first bite tastes fresh out of the pan. To save time, add parchment to the jellyroll pan to aid in removal of the bars- be sure the parchmaent hangs over the edges enough to grab like a handle. Next, once the crust is baked and you're ready to add the chips (I use only semi-sweet)sprinkle them evenly across the dough crust and them pop tray back into the oven with the temperature turned off. There should still be enough heat to quickly and gently melt the chips. Take the tray out once they've softened enough to spread with offset spatula, and score into the desired number of squares. Once the chocolate has chilled and set, it will make cutting much easier. Enjoy!

Made these for the first time. I lightly spooned the flour into the cup and leveled it with a knife, so I know I didn't use too much, but all I can taste is FLOUR! They're dry and not very tasty. My three boys didn't ask for seconds...
