    Chocolate Crumb Bars

    Linda Stetzer from Colfax,WI

I have made these bars NUMEROUS times for home, work, and to take somewhere. They are always a hit and so easy to make! I always add a little more flour to the topping to make it a little more crumbly.

I made this recipe with 3 tablespoons less butter than the recipe called for, and the texture was great.

This recipe needs some help. Either there is too much butter in the recipe or not enough flour to make the batter crumbly as the recipe states.

    Yum

    Michelle Bonner from LINCOLN, NE

The only recommendation I would make for this recipe is make sure you only soften the butter a little and don't melt it. If you melt it the crumb topping does not crumb, it ends up being a cookie dough consistency. However, they still taste good even if that happens.

    Melt in your mouth good..

    Lisa Lombardo from TURNERSVILLE, NJ

Wow! I made these on a whim (I always have morsels on hand), and they were so good! You can't beat shortbread and chocolate. This is a very simple and delicious recipe. The shortbread balances out the sweetness of the chocolate, and the crumb topping just melts in your mouth. If you make these, you won't be disappointed. Another great recipe from my favorite baking site!

    Want crumbs?

    MARY ALLISON from YORK, PA

This is a really delicious and easy recipe. It seems as if the bars would be overly sweet, but they are not! Instead of using soft butter and beating it, pulse the butter cold with the dry ingredients in the food processor for a few seconds. Voila! You have perfect crumbs for the base and topping.

  • Star(s)

    Pretty Good

    Caryn Schwartz from

My only problem making these bars was that, like some of the other reviewers, my crust didn't come out like crumbs. I ended up adding almost double the sugar and flour that the recipe initially called for in order to remedy this. I think the problem may have been that my butter was too melted. That would be my guess. In the end my crust came our kind of hard but it still tasted good, and overall the recipe was very tasty.

  • Star(s)

    fantastic

MIKE BREINER from VIRGINIA BEACH, VA

Every time I make these I get rave reviews. Some times I substituted peacans for walnuts and sometimes I add pepermint exract. Everyone loves them. They are so good you want to keep eating them but they are so sweet you have to fight the urge or your teeth will start to ache. One person doesn't like nuts so I left them out for her and they still taste great

  • Star(s)

    wonderful bars

MARGARET PHILPOTT from NEWPORT NEWS, VA

these are my favorite and that is why I call them wonderful bars. I have made them for about 4 years now and I get all kinds of compliments from them., plus they are not hard to make.

    This had the WOW factor

    Michelle Davids from Stow, OH

This is one of those desserts that make you 'close your eyes and sigh' they're so good. My guests LOVED them and so did I. I wish I had made extra of the shortbread base like someone else suggested. Also, I used toasted pecans instead of walnuts and had to make home-made sweetened condensed milk because I didn't have a can. But it was fabulous. I can't wait to make it again.

    Very Good

    Peggy Robinson from KIRKLIN, IN

I have a granddaughter who can not have anything with eggs, so I wanted to try this before she came out for Christmas. I did not have the plain chocolate chips but had the choc/caramel morsels so I used them and they were delicious. Will be making the same way for Christmas.

    Ginny Radford from AUBURN, NY

This was my first recipe from verybestbaking.com and the reason that I am using this site for all the cookie recipes for our Holidays. I took these cookies to work and had to print out the recipe for coworkers who are better bakers than myself! My family also loved these bars and they were so easy to make.I will definately make them for one of my Holiday cookies. If you haven't tried these cookie bars yet,you really should.

    Good but....

Janis Evans from UNIVERSAL CITY, TX

I have made these several times and my kids liked them but I thought they were a little too sweet. My husband loves Dark chocolate so I decided to try substituting the semi sweet chocolate chips with Nestle Chololatier Dark Chocolate chips. What a difference, they were absolutley PERFECT, not to sweet, just right. Used the whole bag, yielding a few less chips on top. Really good!!

    Tooo Rich

    Lori Fusaro from NUTLEY, NJ

I prepared the recipe as written and I thought it was greasy and too rich. However, my 2 boys (14 & 16) liked them. I will probably make it again if they ask for it, I wouldn't make it for company.

    Excellent Chocolate Crumb Bars

    Andrea Peranni from LAKEWOOD, CO

My family loved these chocolate crumb bars! They were gone before the day was over!

  • Star(s)

    Oh SO yummy!

    Jennifer Zimmer from HOLLAND, MI

These were very easy to make, they came out great. The crust was perfect the chocolate was smooth and silky, the crunch on top was a fabulous addition. I am already trying to find an occation to make these again. I do disagree with with a previous rating about the amount of dough for the crust and topping. It was just enough. You need to make sur eyou flour your fingers well, it really puffs up during baking.

I often have requests for these delicious and easy crumb bars. I sometimes make with nuts and sometimes without. When I have made other bars, I usually come back to these bars, because they are always a hit. I recently brought a batch to my son who is away at college. His friends all said they were awesome.

This recipe was Holiday favorite of my family, but I misplaced it. The only recipe I could find was one that had coconut, and my family will not eat anything made with coconut. So I am thrilled that I have found an lod favorite again. They are so yummy I can't wait to suprise them this weekend. Thanks!
