    Good, but a small warning

    L S from

The first time I made the dough, I followed the directions to the word, and as a result, they somehow came out too crumbly to flatten out with the glass. So I dumped that batch and re-made the dough. This time I beat in the dry ingredients with the mixer instead of by hand with a wooden spoon. This resulted in a much more moist dough, so I was able to flatten out the cookies and bake with no problem. They were delicious- velvety chocolate-y, with a little kick of heat.

This is an excellent cookie recipe -- the 2nd year I have used it for Christmas giveways. Here are two changes I made -- I increased the cayenne to 3/8 teaspoon and used pistachios instead of pecans. Fantastic!

    A little taste of Mexico

Monica Cerda from San Antonio, TX

These cookies remind me of the Mexican hot chocolate my grandmother made me as a child: dark, chocolatey, and spicy. These disappeared in no time and were easy to bake. I've been asked for the recipe over and over.

My daughters are always on the lookout for recipes to take to their Spanish class fiestas. They loved these. I am usually a chicken to add ingredients that just don't seem "right" to me, such as the pepper. But, similar to others, we did and were glad.

These are some of the most unique - and yummy - chocolate cookies I've ever made. You don't really taste the red pepper, just feel a little tingle on your tongue. A more sophisticated "grown-up" shortbread. Great with coffee.

    Tamara H from Hingham, WI

I made these for my Spanish 101 classmates for Christmas. I love the Mexican chocolate taste, and the recipe is simple; however, I find that the dough becomes quite dry and crumbly and difficult to assemble the last sheet of cookies.

My family enjoys the flavors of Mexican chocolate in brownies, cake, and cocoa, so this shortbread cookie was well-received. My preschooler and I had fun trying out different shapes, like little fingers and balls. The recipe is so easy and the flavor combination is so tasty and unique, that this will have a permanent place in my recipe box.

    "couldn't save more"!

    Sudha Hariharan from Markham, ON

The other day when I had made these lovealble cookies, they simply vanished so fast that I was left with almost nothing to store in my cookie jar. Within about half an hour's time, my sister visited us and after tasting the few left over cookies, she exclaimed "couldn't you've saved more for me?"As she loved chocolate cookies, and I was not aware of her (surprise) visit, hence I only could promise her that I would bake more of these cookies for her next time!!

    Easy to Make and Different

    Bobbi Lang from OMAHA, NE

I loved these cookies. They are a great mix of sweet and spicy. They leave a spicy, yet surprisingly sweet flavor in you mouth. They were very easy to make. I would recommend these to anyone who like spice and / or interested in trying something different. My only advise is if you are a novice cook like I am, don't wet the glass to get the sugar to stick. I did that initially not realizing the sugar would stick on its own and it left a couple of the cookies coated in a paste until I figured out that the glass would have enough static electricity to pull up a decent amount of sugar.
