"Kids love the sight of frosting piled high, while adults tend to dread it...but you'll love these. The secret is all in the type of frosting you use. You and your kids will love these Christmas Tree Cupcakes topped with 7-Minute Frosting. 7-Minute frosting uses whipped egg whites instead of butter or shortening, so it is fat-free. It also has a delicious gooey creamy texture you'll love and after an hour or so develops a crispy, crunchy shell with gooey insides. Yum!"

Ingredients

  • 1 box cake mix and other ingredients needed to follow package directions
  • 7-Minute frosting (sugar, egg whites, water, cream of tartar or light corn syrup, vanilla)
  • Green food coloring
  • NESTLÉ® BUTTERFINGER® Jingles and/or NESTLÉ® CRUNCH® Jingles
  • WONKA® Frosty NERDS®
  • WONKA® GOBSTOPPER® Snowballs
  • Cupcake wrappers
  • Gallon-sized zip-close bag
  • Double-boiler (or metal bowl and pot)

Start with a box of cake mix and bake them into cupcakes following the package directions.



While the cupcakes are cooking you can whip up the 7-Minute Frosting.



7-Minute Frosting

1 1/3 cups of sugar

1/3 cup of cold water

2 egg whites

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (or if you don't have cream of tartar, then you can use 2 teaspoons light corn syrup.)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Green food coloring (I prefer the concentrated food gel.)



Combine sugar, water, egg whites, and 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar in top of double boiler. (I don't have a double boiler, so I use a metal bowl placed over a pot.) Mix with an electric mixer until ingredients are combined. Then place over the pot part of your double boiler. (There should just be a little water in the pot part of your double boiler...enough water that it won't boil dry, but not too much that it touches your bowl.) Beat at high speed for approximately 7 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Take off the heat.



Add vanilla and food coloring and mix 2 or 3 more minutes until the frosting is spreading consistency. (Note: It takes more food coloring to tint 7-Minute Frosting than regular frosting, so you're likely to end up with a lighter shade of green.) We just left ours vanilla flavored, but since these have a minty green look, it would also be a fun variation to use some mint extract in the frosting.



When 7-Minute Frosting is finished, spoon all of it into a gallon-sized zip-close plastic bag. Cut a large piece (about an inch wide) off one corner of the bag.



Pipe a little frosting onto the top of the cupcake to act as "glue" to hold on Crunch® or Butterfinger® Jingle. We're putting the Jingle in the center to help our cupcake hold its shape and support its height...and of course to be a fun chocolaty surprise in the middle.



Start by piping the frosting around the base of the Jingle so that the cupcake is fully covered.



Then continue swirling the frosting around the Jingle, making the swirls a bit smaller as you go up and you've reached the top and center.



Then stop squeezing the frosting and lift your bag straight up to form the spike at the top of the tree.



Now have fun sprinkling Wonka® Frosty Nerds® all over as "ornaments". When fresh, the 7-Minute Frosting is gooey and does a great job "catching" the Nerds®. Give most of them a little tap just to make sure they are stuck in the frosting, but once on, they do a great job staying put.



Put a Gobstopper® Snowball on top for a "star" which is a fun variation, although you have to give up the pointy tree top.



These trees are so fast and easy to make, that you'll have your own little forest in no time.
