Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Baking Cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk *
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, divided (optional)
  • 1/4 cup NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mini Morsels
  • CHOCOLATE HONEY BUTTER (recipe follows)

Directions:

PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.

COMBINE flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and baking soda in medium bowl. Beat butter and sugar in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk. Fold in 1/4 cup pecans. Pour into prepared pan.

BAKE for 20 minutes. Top with morsels and remaining pecans; continue baking for 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes; remove to wire rack to cool completely. Serve with Chocolate Honey Butter.

FOR CHOCOLATE HONEY BUTTER:
MICROWAVE
1/2 cup NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mini Morsels in small, uncovered, microwave-safe bowl on HIGH (100%) power for 30 seconds; STIR. The morsels may retain some of their original shape. If necessary, microwave at additional 10 to 15-second intervals, stirring just until morsels are melted; let cool. Beat cooled morsels, 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter and 2 tablespoons honey in small mixer bowl until fluffy. Makes about 1 cup.

*NOTE: If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can substitute sour milk made with NESTLÉ CARNATION Evaporated Milk (Regular, Lowfat or Fat Free). Measure 1/2 cup NESTLÉ CARNATION Evaporated Milk into glass measuring cup. Add 1/2 cup water and 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice; stir. Let stand for 5 minutes before using.

I made this bread for my husband to take to work for a potluck. There were raves and requests for the recipe. Whenever another potluck comes up my husbands co-workers beg him to bring the bread.

I loved this bread and the chocolate honey butter. I'm not a big chocolate eater but this sounded easy and I had all the ingredients at hand. It turned out wonderful. I will make it again and again. I also like the butter spread on pancakes and buttery crackers.

This bread is so good. I added the chips to the batter as some have suggested and the bread turned out delicious. I'm making more today. I even heat up the slices in the microwave and spread some butter over the slices . My daughter and I just love it.

    Incredible!

    Becky Byers from Butler, PA

This bread is moist and delicious. I did not add the nuts and did not make the glaze but it was still one of the best breads I have made. It was easy to make but tasted like it was much more difficult to make. My husband loved it, even on the second day as it stayed moist.

    make them into muffins

    andrea dagostino from rocklin, CA

made the bread and it was good, without the topping or spread as others noted...but being a muffin girl had to try it and with about a 1/4 cup of dark chocolate chips folded in they were great. cook till toothpick comes out mostly clean and watch out for testing in a spot that has a chip. I had some ripe bananas and tried a variation with only 1/2 stick butter, 2 ripe mashed bananas added after creaming the butter and sugar, substituted 1/2 cup whole wheat flour for the regular, and say about a 1/2 tsp of vanilla. My two boys and husband loved them...oh and don't forget the chocolate chips! Yum!

A definite keeper. The bread was moist and had lots of chocolate flavor. I took the advice of other reviewers and mixed the chips into the batter in the end and eliminated the nuts. I also iincreased the amount of chips to compensate for the missing nuts. It satisfies the chocolate fix. I shared the bread with friends and they all loved it.

Very good bread. I took the advise of previous posters and added the nuts and chocolate chips into the batter instead of on top. It has a nice chocolate taste, unlike many other chocolate breads that I have made.

I made this bread for a breakast thing at work and it went over well. It's pretty good and it's something a bit different to have rather than regular bread and it hits that sweet spot too without being too much.

    Good, but needed adjusting

    Carol Pryor from Freeburg, Illinois

I made this for Christmas gifts, the next time I make it, I will fold in the chips and nuts into the batter. It was too messy putting them on the top, especially when you turn the loaf out of the pan.

    Way Good!!

    Jackie Wilson from WELLSVILLE, UT

My daughter is a chocoholic, and when I found this recipe I had to make it for her. She gave me her highest rating! We changed it a little-- we mix 1/2 cup of chocolate morsels into the batter with the nuts, and we don't sprinkle any on the top. It was easy to make, and has a wonderful flavor and texture. I would recommend this to everyone who loves chocolate cake, muffins, or just an easy treat!

The "Delicious Chocolate Quick Bread" is truly delicious. I doubled the recipe to make four medium loaves. I took one to work, and it was a big hit. I did not make the chocolate honey butter spread because I thought the bread would be rich enough, but now I am intrigued by it and might try it next time. I substituted applesauce for the butter, and it turned out fine. I also mixed chocolate chips into the batter as well as adding chips and nuts to the top as directed.

    Definitely Delicious Chocolate Bread

    Susan Egelseer from AMERICUS, GA

The bread is delicious and moist. The first time I tried this recipe, I followed the directions for adding the topping 20 minutes into baking. The chocolate chips and nuts fell off and made a mess of the oven. The loaves did not slice well due to the topping. The second time, I just mixed all of the nuts and the chips into the cake batter with wonderful results.

My husband loves quick breads. He has them mid morning like you would a donut or muffin so I make a lot of quick breads. Made this the other day and he had some in the evening and then again in the morning. He loved it. It was easy to make and quick. I'm going to make it in mini loaf pans and use it with other quick breads as little Christmas gifts. I feel everyone will loved it like my husband did. Thanks.

Bread was very good, but I would skip the step where you add the remaining pecans and mini-morsels to the top after baking for 20 minutes. After releasing the bread from the pan, most of the nuts and morsels fell all over my countertop, which were then wasted.

This was one of the recipes featured in the latest issue of the Nestle magazine. It looked so dark and delicioius I knew I had to make it soon. The very next day I made 2 loaves and it didn't disappoint. Was it ever delicious..... rich chocolate taste combined with pecans and mini morsels were the perfect combination. Everyone at my office and my husbands (and our son) ate it up immediately. I will be making this bread for the rest of my life!
