  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • TOPPING
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream (we recommend LAND O LAKES®)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

PREHEAT oven to 350° F.

FOR CRUST:

crumbs, butter and sugar in medium bowl. Press onto bottom and 1-inch up side of ungreased 9-inch springform pan.

BAKE for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.

FOR FILLING:
MELT
morsels in 2-quart saucepan over low heat for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until melted. Cool for 15 minutes.

COMBINE cream cheese and 3/4 cup sugar in large mixer bowl. Beat at medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes, scraping bowl often. Gradually add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Reduce speed to low; add melted chocolate, 1/2 cup sour cream and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Beat until well mixed for 1 to 2 minutes. Pour cheesecake mixture into baked crust.

BAKE for 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 35 minutes or until just set 2 inches from edge of pan.

FOR TOPPING:
COMBINE
1 1/2 cups sour cream, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in small bowl. Spread evenly over top of hot, partially baked cheesecake. Continue baking for 5 minutes. Let stand uncovered until cooled (1 to 2 hours). Loosen sides of cheesecake by running knife around inside of pan. Loosely cover; refrigerate 8 hours or overnight. Store refrigerated.

    New York comes South!

My daughter and I baked this for our new neighbor that had helped us move in. The recipe made enough for two, so the second one went to my friends in North Carolina. So far, we have received much praise for the taste of this cheesecake. I love trying new recipes, and this one didn't disappoint.

    excellent cheesecake

    PAT BENNETT from DACULA, GA

Everyone at the office said it was the very, very best...but it was a little different from the usual recipe I use. I'd try it again with darker chocolate, maybe a chocolate crust. Not sure about the sour cream topping, but it was better than I thought it would be when I poured it on; I had visions of scraping it off! Whipped cream would be good, too.

This is the first time I've attempted a cheesecake and it was delicious! (at least I thought so.) Instead of using the topping in the recipe I used my home-made strawberry sauce. Yum!

Making this cheesecake was my second recipe made from scratch on my own...and it was great. This cheesecake was better than my moms old family recipe, and im making the cheesecakes from now on! It was a lot of fun to make and see (and taste) my creation.

    The best Chocolate Cheesecake

    Kim Robertson from Demossville, KY

This is the best chocolate cheesecake that I have tasted! I gave my printed copy to a friend so I had to come back to get another copy. This is so creamy and delicious. I like to drizzle Nesquick chocolate syrup on top of the whipped cream. It adds flavor as well as creates an awesome inviting look to it. You have got to try this!

My daughter wanted something different for her birthday cake. She did not want a store bought cake but something home made & unique. When I saw this recipe I knew I had found just the cake for her birthday. Not only is it scrumptious but she adores cheesecake making it a chocolate cheesecake was the winning touch. This cheesecake was the hit of her party now everyones mom is calling me for the recipe.

    Almost the Same

    Arlene Mruk from Williamsville, NY

In reviewing the ingredients in this cheesecake they are almost the same as the regular cheesecake I make. In my recipe I use 5 eggs but no sour cream or chocolate in the ingredients. The chocolate and sour cream must take the place of the egg. I know my family will love this. Can't wait to bake it.

Try this - you won't be sorry!

Suzanne Smith from San Diego, CA

I made this great cheesecake as a Christmas dinner dessert and couldn't be more pleased. The steps were clear and easy to follow. My family, from the little ones to the grandparents, enjoyed the cheesecake. It really does taste like a restaurant-quality dessert. (I did follow a bit of advice from one of the other reviewers who said to let the cheesecake cool a bit before spreading on the topping. That's good advice.)

Gradually reducing the temperature as the cheescake bakes will help to reduce the crack on the top. So sometimes I will bake the cheesecake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees then reduce it to 300 for the remaining time. With this one I would then add the topping, place it in the 300 degree oven for the five minutes and then turn off the oven and leave the cake in for another 15 minutes and then remove it to cool on a wire rack.

I wouldn't put the topping on until the cake is completely cooled. Otherwise it melts a little in the oven and the brown of the cake shows through and makes it look a slight green color.
