I have revised this recipe by adding the juice of an orange as well as vanilla extract. I also add white chocolate chips and toasted, chopped pecans, and it makes for that perfect sweet and salty harmony that everyone craves. Anytime I make these, they disappear fast and have requests to make them again and again!

These were my brothers favorite cookie. One thing I learned from him is that it is ok to melt the butter in the microwave. He had arthritis and it made it hard to cream the butter and sugar. It does not impact the recipe cookies turned out the same.

These are by far one of the best cookies I have ever made. I made them for Cake Day at the end of my basketball season where everyone brings in a dessert for a party, and when I brought these people were hesitant to eat them because of appearance, but I influenced them to taste them and they were gone just like that.

I have made these for many years. I just use 1/2 the sugar, whole wheat flour for the white. I always freeze some cooked cookies for unexpected quests. They don't take long to thaw out.

    Delicious craving

Cynara Robinson from San Diego, CA

I was at the George W. Bush Airport and ran into the Toll House stand in which I ordered this. Little did I know that I would be craving this my whole vacation. Upon leaving my destination in which I had to change again in Houston I was so elated to know my gate was right in front of the stand again. I ordered the whole roll and came home later on this week to make them for my family. This is one you'll crave time and time again.

    ALWAYS A FAVORITE

Lori Wilson from San Diego, CA

For years these cookies have been a favorite with our family. Even when tripling the recipe, the Oatmeal Scotchies disappear fast. I like to mix and refrigerate the dough at least 24 hours in advance as the flavors tend to blend a bit better. Also, we make extra dough and put in freezer so that we can have "fresh homemade cookies" for unexpected company.

I loved these cookies. They were so sweet and chewy. Perfect with milk. Instead of using vanila extract I used maple flavoring. It hit the spot. It blended nicely with the butterscotch chips. This one is definitely a winner.

    Needs more baking time!

    liz henderson from

These cookies are delicious, but if you bake them for only 7-8 minutes, they're incredibly delicate and likely to fall apart. I had far better results when I baked them for 11-13 minutes. In the more-baked version, they didn't flatten out as much, were more raised in the middle, and felt (and looked) more like a cohesive cookie. However, they are crispier, but at least this way, they won't fall apart. Also, I think spraying the pan lightly with Pam helps with the removal, and overall presentation, of these cookies.

This is my eldest niece's favorite cookie. She and I were the only ones who ever ate these. Well, she is now an adult with two beautiful boys of her own. Last year I made her a batch and sent them to her. This year I am making them as cookies in a jar mixes (Simply omitting the wet ingredients) so that she can make them for her boys and enjoy them fresh and warm out of the oven. Thank you for this recipe.

Great cookies!!! I love them, but some people in my family do not like butterscotch. I've started making a batch of butterscotch and with the same recipe exchanging the scotch for chocolate morsels. I love the texture and consistency of the oatmeal cookie. This recipe is the only type of oatmeal cookie I'll eat! Love them! :)
