Grain drinks of all types are popular throughout Latin America. This Hot Chocolate Oatmeal Drink recipe, inspired by our Circle of Friends member, Olga from Virginia, uses oats and is creamy and delicious with a hint of cinnamon. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly autumn or winter day.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 2 cans (12 fl. oz. each) NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 3/4 cup NESTLÉ NESQUIK Chocolate Flavor Powder

PLACE water and oats in blender container; cover. Blend for 30 seconds. Strain mixture through fine mesh strainer into medium saucepan. Discard solids.

ADD evaporated milk, sugar, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg to saucepan. Cook on medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture lightly coats the back of a spoon (about 25 to 30 minutes). Remove from heat and remove cinnamon sticks.

STIR in Nesquik with wire whisk until well blended. If necessary, additional warmed evaporated milk or water can be added for a thinner consistency. Serve hot with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches or arepas.

A unique hot chocolate.

I was amazed to find this version of Hot Chocolate was very good. I was surprised when I first read the ingredients, but I love oatmeal and thought I'll give it a try and I really enjoyed it. I found it to be smooth and rich.

Good, but lumpy

I made this hot chocolate on a very cold day here in Maine. It was good (I love the idea of making it with oatmael), but the chocolate powder was very lumpy, even after it whipped for several minutes with my whisk. What did I do wrong?

Olga's Hot Chocolate Oatmeal Drink

I tried this today and I used other cocoa powder instead of the Nesquik! It's was bad for homemade, but my kids didn't care for it! I will try it again with Nesquik! Hopefully my kids will like it better! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
