Sour Milk made with CARNATION® Nonfat Dry Milk (A Substitute for Buttermilk)

Ingredients

1/3 cup dry NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice

 

Directions

If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can substitute sour milk made with CARNATION® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk.

COMBINE dry Nonfat Dry Milk with water in small measuring cup. Add vinegar or lemon juice; stir. Let stand 5 minutes before using in recipe.

    WOW! I was sooooooo excited to find this recipe...Carnation Nonfat Dry Milk is a staple in my kitchen, as was my Mother and Grandmother's kitchens...and I don't always have Buttermilk or Sour milk on hand for recipes!     I have used this recipe since I was a child. That is the only buttermilk my mother ever used. This makes excellent biscuits, cornbread and anything else you would use buttermilk for. Excellent!!

    I am very happy to locate this recipe. Buttermilk is something I buy only when I'm sure it will be used for baking. Many times I don't use or try a recipe because the Buttermilk is not on hand. Thank you, Carnation!

    it's not so bad

    I have used this alternative lots of times, most of the time it works great, but some things , like pancakes, need the butterfat to give proper texture to the product. Try adding some applesauce, prune puree, or mashed bananas to the recipe, that usually does the trick for me.

    I used this recipe to make buttermilk pancakes. They were horrible! Next time I will used Carnation evaporation milk instead of the dry non-fat milk powder.
