Sour Milk made with CARNATION® Nonfat Dry Milk is a great alternative to buttermilk.


  • 1/3 cup dry NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice

If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can substitute sour milk made with CARNATION® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk.

COMBINE dry Nonfat Dry Milk with water in small measuring cup. Add vinegar or lemon juice; stir. Let stand 5 minutes before using in recipe.

Buttermilk Hush puppys

Wow This was a life saver I was making a Hush Puppy Bake and was about to start when I relised I had no Buttermilk. I came on here and found this and it saved me. Thank You Carnation.

WOW! I was sooooooo excited to find this recipe...Carnation Nonfat Dry Milk is a staple in my kitchen, as was my Mother and Grandmother's kitchens...and I don't always have Buttermilk or Sour milk on hand for recipes! Sour Milk Made wiht Carnation Nonfact Dry Milk

I have used this recipe since I was a child. That is the only buttermilk my mother ever used. This makes excellent biscuits, cornbread and anything else you would use buttermilk for. Excellent!!



This a great way to have sourmilk when you don't have buttermilk. I use this a lot.
