    Excellent!

Miranda McCall from , Roseburg, Oregon

This was delicious as a cake recipe, but I had an idea and I replaced the cake mix with brownie mix. Now my family (including the in-laws) request my upside down cream cheese brownies at almost every event!

    Oh soooo good!

    Lorraine Ryba from Murrieta, CA

I would not recommend using the "Butter" style cake mixes (where you add butter vs. oil) as my cream cheese layer didn't quite sink properly and I'm sure it's because of the cake mix. However, that said, this STILL was an AWESOME recipe!!! It was rich and delicious and just a little "different." No frosting needed!!

This cake was so easy to make and so good to go down. The taste reminds me of German Sweet Chocolate Cake, but a lot shorter time to make it. Try it you'll really like it.

    A Hit at Office Birthday

    Diana Glenn from MESA, AZ

I took this cake to the office for the birthday of a co-worker -- got rave reviews and requests for the recipe. The only thing I did different was frost it with chocolate frosting to make it look a little prettier after being inverted. AWESOME!!!

    JEANETTE CROTEAU from Snowville, VA

Mine didn't turn out as pretty as the picture shown but boy did they taste wonderful! I love the part of the recipe that has you combine cream cheese, butter, and conf. sugar. I think I'll be trying that three ingredient combo in other recipes.

Great Tasting Cake - But with Different Results

    Tina Nevitt from Fairfax, VA

I saw the recipe and decided to make one. While the cake is very delicious and quite easy to make, I was dissapointed like others when the cream cheese layer ended up somewhere in the middle, and the cake cracked when inverted. However, everyone in my office loved the taste!

This was really good and really easy to make. Will make it again soon. It was really convenient, too. All of the ingredients are things that I usually have on hand. Since the kids are not very fond of coconut, I omitted that, it was not missed, but next time, I think I will add it just to see how they eat it with the coconut.

    Disappointing

    Frances Gallagher from ROCHESTER, NY

This cake did not turn out as expected. My cream cheese layer did not move through the cake to end up just below the chocolate chip layer like in the picture. The end result was quite a disappointment. If I made this again, I would drizzle the cream cheese directly over the chocolate chip layer to see how that works; however, this recipe is not a keeper for me. I have found many other recipes on this site that are much much better.

    "Its supposed to Crack"

    melody plowman from YADKINVILLE, NC

I noticed some of the reviews commented on the cake "cracking" and not turning out flat....This recipe is a very old one, and used to be called an "Earthquake Cake"...for the simple reason the cream cheese filling makes it heavy and it settles, causing the cake to have a look similiar to an "earthquake"...this is perfectly normal. I also have made this before and instead of inverting it I would omit the chocolate chips on the bottom and frost the "cracked" top with a lite chocolate frosting..one made with corn syrup and very little cocoa....

    A Delicious Change

    Cassundra Freeman from Austin, TX

This was a very good cake. I made it for luncheon at work just to try something different. I did not get many takers to try it, but when I brought the rest of it home it was eaten up by my family. I know they were just waiting to see how much of it was going to make it back. The sweetness of the cream cheese and the chocolate was a suprising change. I will make another one for the weekend and share this recipe with my sister for the holidays.

    Not a good turn out

    Mrs. K from MA

I think the cream cheese should be drizzled over the chocolate chips (that's how it looks in the pic). A cake never bakes perfectly flat...when I turned the cake over it cracked in half. I had to put it back in the pan and frost it. So sad this didn't turn out as expected.

    German Chocolate cake made simple!

Candice Williams from OLD HICKORY, TN

This cake is both simple and delicious. However, I made it a bit easier by not lining my pan, sprinkling coconut and pecans only on bottom, topping with cake mix, then cream cheese mixture, then sprinkling chocolate chips over the top. This way you get yummy things throughout the cake, and there is no need to invert cake. Just serve from the pan.

We loved it warmed a bit with a scoop of ice cream. I also eliminated the nuts and coconut on one half and it was just as good and rich. Try it you'll love it!!!
