Whipped Carnation Nonfat Dry Milk Topping is a recipe you can use without having to be concerned about fat. Chilled instant nonfat dry milk, unflavored gelatin and sugar make this topping a treat you'll find easy to serve and enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • 1/2 cup dry NESTLÉ® CARNATION® Instant Nonfat Dry Milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons unflavored gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 2 tablespoons boiling water
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

COMBINE ice water and dry milk in large mixer bowl. Freeze bowl, milk mixture and beaters for 15 minutes. Combine gelatin and cold water in small bowl. Let stand for 3 minutes. Add boiling water; blend well. Cool to room temperature.

WHIP chilled milk mixture until stiff peaks form. Add gelatin mixture, sugar and vanilla extract. Whip just until blended.

NOTE: If whipped topping develops an airy appearance, simply stir vigorously to restore smooth appearance. For best results, prepare same day as serving.

Recipe makes 3 cups.

    This was very good on top of cobbler. It has a unique taste which is great with homemade desserts, so why not go all the way if you are taking the time to make a homemade dessert to make the homamde whipped cream? It is well worth the extra time!!

    Since you can keep nonfat dry milk around all the time, it makes it so nice to have a weay of having whipped topping without having to rush to the store and let it defrost. You just make it fresh each time you need it.

    This came out so good that I decided to experiment with it. I had some left over white cake so I made the whipped topping but with a twist I added a teaspoon of cocoa powder and 1 package of artificial sweetner it was to good to be true. I am going to try other flavors after this right now i'm thinking of putting in a teaspoon of mint flavoring. YUMMY.

    When I first saw this, I thought, "Why not just buy the fat free whipped topping at the store?", but when you taste the result, you'll be glad you added this extra laye of home made deliciousness! It really makes a great difference on top of your strawberry shortcakes, EXCELLENT on ice cream, and if you want to think outside of the box, top it on a piece of toasted white bread (you'll be suprised!). But, nothing beats this chilled topping on a bowl of fresh, sweetned fruit! (and it's healthy!)

    We all love whipped topping, and this recipe beats non-dairy topping hands down. So you have to actually do something to create it, at least you know what is going in it, you could change the flavorings to make it complement your desert or drink that you are using it for. I used it for pumpkin pie this year. I am keeping this recipe in my home journal. I will no longer buy prepapaired whipped topping. This is so much healther for my family, and worth the effort.

    I think your (as my) review of this recipe will depend on your dessert you are serving it with. On one hand, it requires more effort with the mixing of several ingredients, chilling time, etc. than opening a tub of whipped topping. Conversely, this is low fat and the taste is acceptable. We had the topping on the top of angelfood cake and fresh sliced peaches (which are in season) and it just melted in your mouth. I don't think the topping would hold up in another dessert where you would depend on some thickening. Now, I'm wondering if the leftover might be incorporated into some other dessert, say a pudding-based one? Maybe.
